About Be & Breathe

Here you can find a bit more about us. Be and Breathe Ltd provides a quiet retreat house on a very accessible Scottish island. Where guests can relax and refresh themselves in a private and confidential environment, to enhance their well-being. Perhaps you need a space for your thoughts, to reassess your life and some mindfulness ? Or if you’re a busy business professional, somewhere completely different from your normal routine, for some ‘me time’ away from the daily grind. Are you a writer? – somewhere quiet to focus, and to gather your ideas. The island is also an ideal location for artists and nature lovers and nature therapy with spectacular views, abundant wildlife and the ever changing light.

What is Be & Breathe?

The ethos of this quiet retreat is for you, the guest, to explore for yourself what you feel you may need. For example, do you need peace and isolation during your stay, with very little disturbance? Perhaps you feel you need a small range of therapies to help you relax? Or maybe you feel you need to share some of your concerns with others on the retreat.

This quiet retreat house is all about treating you as an individual, as we are all unique, with unique requirements. We all need time out from our busy lives, and sometimes that may mean doing as little as possible, and being allowed to be left alone. So ‘Be and Breathe’ is about simplicity with an emphasis on mindfulness – to enable you to feel relaxed and replenished, and to allow you to have the space you need, in a very comfortable environment.

ABOUT THE RETREAT HOUSE

The house was chosen as a retreat house due to it’s location. The Island of Bute is very accessible from the mainland of Scotland by regular ferry links. Even so, there is a feeling of ‘ really getting away from it all’, due to the slower pace of life, constant sea views, fresh air and abundant wildlife.
The position of the house on the island  is stunning, with views across the Firth of Clyde to the Argyll hills. The house has colourful gardens, with some unusual plants, and is an ideal place to relax.

There are some pleasant walks near to the house which are perfect for practicing mindfulness, including woodland and coastal walks that are only 5 minutes away. There is also a public display garden nearby, with glasshouses and an aviary.

The local town of Rothesay, with it’s variety of shops, castle, museum, and visitor centre, is about 20 minutes walk from the house. Further afield there are a number of historical sites located around the island that are worth a visit.

House History

The house was built in 1888 for a Victorian merchant as his coastal family holiday home. Many of the original features within the house remain from this period, including cornicing, ornate bannisters, woodwork, and the floor plan.
The house is in the suburb of Craigmore, and during the Victorian era many houses were built on the island as holiday homes for business people from the City of Glasgow and beyond. City families and their servants would locate to the island during the summer months, and while the father travelled regularly back to the city on business, his wife and children would remain. These Victorian holiday homes were popular, as spending time at this coastal location had health benefits, as it was far from the industrial smog of the city.
